9/11 — Hate the Haters

Before Sept. 11, 2001, we didn’t pay much attention to international news. Al Queda was something we may or may not have heard of but it certainly wasn’t something in our collective knowledge we needed to be concerned with. And then more than 3,000 people lost their lives to 19 terrorists. They hate us, these terrorists, and will stop at nothing to try to destroy us and our way of life. And we hate them in return.

But any more than I want to be judged as an American by that whacko Rev. Terry Jones or the Unabomber or Timothy McVeigh — we must remember not to judge all Muslims by the acts of these whackos. Islamic terrorists are just that, terrorists that also happen to be Islamic. Just as we have terrorists who also happen to be American. We have terrorists who also happen to be Arab. We have terrorists who also happen to be Somolian. But they are all just one thing: Terrorists.

I understand overgeneralizing — we all do it. But it’s dangerous. The talking heads who feed on this, the Glenn Beck’s of the world, want us to be angry and they want us to spin around and direct hate at every person who looks or is different than white and Christian. Sound familiar? Let’s make sure we just have ONE correct race and ONE correct religion. Isn’t that what the terrorists also want? Diversity makes the world go round. I certainly don’t want to live in that world — on either side. Don’t think you would either.

So let’s dial down the the rhetoric and up the intelligent conversation. Let’s hate the haters — the terrorists. Every Muslim is not a terrorist. Every American is not a dumbass hick. So, let’s be sure to show that.

I love my country. I, like every one else, will never forget.
